Personally identifiable information

What’s OK? collects personally identifiable information (such as names and email addresses) from Users only when they voluntarily provide such information to us, including, for example, when Users seek help from us through our Helpline and in writing or verbally provide that information, and it is necessary to collect that information because of a report involving a crime.

How What’s OK? Uses the Information that It Collects from the Website and Helpline

What’s OK? uses Users’ personal information to better understand how Users use the Website so that What’s OK? can improve the Website and its offerings.

If you contact What’s OK? seeking help through email, chat or text, What’s OK? will communicate with you regarding your request for help and will then follow up with you with a one-time survey. What’s OK? will not contact you further.

The Helpline uses a content management system to collect non-identifying information about Helpline contacts. This information is used for the purpose of reporting the overall use and impact of the Helpline.

The information collected includes state/country of Helpline user, how they found the service, user’s age and information about the situation that prompted them to use the Helpline service. This information includes (when shared) demographics about the situation such as the relationship between the Helpline user and people involved, the reason for the helpline request, the situation location, recommended next steps, and other essential information shared by the user.

What’s OK? adopts appropriate data collection, storage and processing practices and security measures to help protect against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure or destruction of your personal information, but What’s OK? cannot guarantee that your information is 100% secure. Please note that communications to What’s OK? through email, chat and text are not encrypted. You should always be careful about disclosing personally identifiable information online. What’s OK? is not responsible for the use by others of information that you provide via the Website.

Sharing Personal Information Collected through the Website and Helpline

Other than as set forth herein, What’s OK? does not share personally identifiable information about Users with third parties unless required to do so by law, or in the good faith belief that such action is necessary to comply with state and federal laws or to respond to a court order, subpoena, or search warrant. Specifically, What’s OK? may disclose personally identifiable information to the appropriate authorities if we believe that someone is in immediate danger. (See Filing Reports)

What’s OK? may also share generic aggregated demographic information not linked to any personally identifiable information regarding Users with third parties for such purposes as reporting and fund-raising.

Third Party Websites

What’s OK? may provide links from the Website to other websites. What’s OK? does not control the content or links that appear on these third party websites and is not responsible for the practices employed by websites linked to or from the Website. These websites and services have their own privacy policies. Browsing and interaction on any other website, including websites that have a link to or from What’s OK?’s Website, is subject to that website’s own terms and policies. Your Acceptance of These Terms

Confidentiality on the Helpline

What’s OK? is committed to creating a private place where people can freely and openly discuss their concerns about child sexual abuse and consider what steps to take next. We maintain your confidentiality as long as you keep your anonymity. To maintain privacy, anyone contacting the Helpline should refrain from disclosing identifying information, such as last names, addresses, phone numbers, and employers of anyone directly involved in an abusive situation. What’s OK? does not need any of these details to provide guidance and resources.

For those who call the Helpline, no caller ID is used, so What’s OK? does not know your phone number unless you voluntarily provide it. What’s OK? does have access to the phone numbers contacting the Helpline from the information provided on our telephone bill, but we do not match that information with particular callers. Chat IP addresses are made invisible to our Helpline and we do not attempt to trace IP addresses. Email return addresses are visible to our Helpline consultants but are not collected.

IP addresses and email addresses are not considered reliable identifying information, however if identifying information specific to abusive and criminal behavior is disclosed, and we are required to file a report (See Filing Reports), these addresses may be shared upon request with the proper authorities.

Helpline User Comments

Helpline staff sometimes request permission from individuals to use their comments on the Website or in other What’s OK? materials for marketing and reporting purposes. These comments will only be used if permission is granted. When comments are used, they are always anonymous and contain no personally identifiable information.

Filing Reports

What’s OK? will offer assistance if any caller wishes to file a report with the appropriate authorities. Please recognize that if a Helpline caller chooses to provide What’s OK? with identifying information about specific people involved in a particular child abuse situation, What’s OK? may be required to file a report with the appropriate authorities. If you have further questions concerning our confidentiality policy concerning the Helpline, please ask at the beginning of your Helpline call.
